CPU/Ram: ?
Model/Manufacturer: Gateway
Comment:

I am using an old Gateway with windows 98 and every time I try to download a file it saves it as a Windows media player file. How do I change it back to where it downloads the file and automatically opens it with what its suppose to?

"every time I try to download a file"

What kind of file are we talking about?
Is it all file types or just one?
What extension does it have before you download it?

After knowing that then go to Folder Options, File Types, Select that extension from the list, Edit and place a tick next to Confirm Open after download.

The next time you go to download that type of file you will get the Download file prompt where you can choose to save it or open it. Save it to your desktop but making sure that the file type matches the original extention instead of Windows Media file type.

GIMP is a "program". What Bryco meant was the actual file extension. Are all the downloads zip files for instance?

If you are not set to show all file extensions then it will be necessary to do so if we are to make any headway.

When it saves a download does it keep the same extension or change it to something else?

Do the same file types work which are already on your machine?
