Recently installed MS Train Simulator. When I try to run it I get a message that it requires Hardware Acceleration. I am running DirectX 8.0 and have a IBM Thinkpad Cyber 9397 (Trident) video card. What is problem and how do I fix?

Not familliar with Cyber 9397 Vid adapter. Is it a 3D accelerator like Nvidia GeForce or ATI Radeon?

Many games will only run on graphics cards that have native 3D hardware acceleration.

I suggest you download the Sandra utility here:

... then install it and run the DirectX Info module. That will tell you whether your graphics card has 3d hardware acceleration.

Try Clicking Start > Run and typing dxdiag in the Run dialogue box. This is microsoft's direct x diagnostic tool.

so if you don't have a 3d card, then you cannot run the game, simple as that. No way to get the game playing until you buy one.
