I have a 6.4 with win98 runing and a slave 1.1 installed on my system. I would like to take the 1.1gb and put it into a older 486. Can I install my win95 or my win98 on the drive befor I take it out of my computer. Or is there a better way to do it. The old 486 has a 220mb drive and win3.1. The old drive is going to the great computer gods in the sky.It has nothing on it that i need to save.

John, Your best bet would be to put the 1.1 into the 486 first, then run fdisk from a boot floppy, and create new active partition on it, then format it and install windows 95. It is not impossible, but very complicated to make the partition of a slave drive active, which is required for it to boot. Also I don't recommend windows 98 on a 486, as win98 requires more from the computer. Windows 95 runs ok on 486. Hope this helps, Al

The BIOS in the 486 may not be able to handle the 1.1 GIG hard drive, and you will need a driver in order to access the entire drive. Just something to be watching for if it will not format larger than 500 meg or so.

As the setup process has to detect what processor and m/board you are running and then has to install drivers and setup for that condition, I would suggest that the setup is done in the 486 to get it done right. No good setting up for a pentium setup and then expecting it to work in a 486. As an analogy, try taking the Diesel engine out of a Mack truck and sticking it in a Ford Pinto. There you have it.
