I have an old Compac PC 120Mhz. Win 98 upgrade from win 95. Old harddrive is 1.2 Gig. New one is 6 Gig. The PC only recognizes 1.2 of the new HD. Can the bios be updated? Surely it should recognize atleast 2 gig. And what is this drive overlay program I've heard about? Is that just another name for fdisk or Partition Magic?

Probably all you have to do is enter the Bios 'setup' program and have the Bios detect the new drive. I think it thinks that you still have the old drive.

Consider the following capacity points and dates of BIOS
Prior to Aug. 1994 May not support Hard Drives larger than 528 MB
Prior to Feb. 1996 May not support Hard Drives larger than 2.1 GB
Prior to Jan. 1998 May not support Hard Drives larger than 8.4 GB
Prior to June 1999 May not support Hard Drives larger than 32 GB
The above will tell you why your computer will only recognize the smaller drive.
To solve this problem go to the manufactures web site for the new hard drive and download their ez bios program and it will allow your computer to use any size hard drive but this needs to be spacifice to the hard drive you are trying to install. Most new hard drives come with a floppy disk in the box you use to install the hard drive.
Hope that helps.

Hi Jody,
Upon fitting a new hard drive, the BIOS must always be informed as to the changes to hardware. Use auto detect if your BIOS has the option, make sure you set your new hard drive to LBA mode, and remember to fdisk and full format a new hard drive.

Did you add the 6 gig or swap it with the 1.2? Did you copy the 1.2 to the 6 or is it a fresh install?
