What types of things can make your hard drive go bad besides the obvious, i.e. viruses? I don't have a failing hard drive. I am only curious.

Virii do not make your hard drive "go Bad". They only corrupt the data which can then be restored (often). The drive itself is still good. Dirt (don't remove the cover so see what is inside), excessive vibration, bad connections, moisture, heat can affect the drive itself. Often only one or a few sectors become bad. But this should be a warning to backup important data as the end may be near.

Your hard drive can also be damaged if it is being read or written to when you have an improper shutdown, such as caused by a power failure.
