Hard Drive wont detect

My mother board fails to detect my harddrive when plugged into the Primary Master socket on the Motherboard. I have a western digital 20 gig harddrive. It has worked fine since I got it then all of a sudden the computer froze and when I restarted the system it would not detect the drive. I changed the jumpers on the harddrive and put it on master. Low and behold it booted up with no problem. I started playing a game and exited the game and it froze again. I restarted the computer and it wouldnt detect the drive. I unplugged the the harddrive and plugged it in to the secondary master plug and it works fine. But Nothing will work on Primary. I dont know what too do. I have a ASUS P2-99 board with a P2 400 processor. Please help.....Could this be a virus?? I didnt detect any in my scan. Email me please if you have had a similar problem..... The computer works find when i plug the harddrive in the secondary slot.....

Any Yellow exclamation marks in front of the Primary Ide Controller in the Device Manager? Also, double check the connection for the Primary Ide cable to the motherboard, it could of worked loose.

I have an asus p2-99 mobo and it wont detect my maxtor twenty gig at all! I booted it up for the first time and I Have the hard drive plugged into an ata/66 controller and it wouldn't detect it so I plugged it straight into the board eventhough it is only udma 33 and It detected it but then there was a checksum error and I couldnt format it.
