Hard Drive Space

I have Win98 with a factory 4.3 gig hard drive. This has also bothered me...when I view the amount of drive space I have (the pie chart), it says I have a 2.0 gig capacity of Drive C: with 1.4 used and .6 of free space. I opened the back of my machine and sure enough, it's a 4.3 gig hard drive like it said when I bought it. I don't have any of the drives partitioned or anything like that. Anyone know how to tap into the remaining 2.3 gigs of my hard drive? I want that pie chart to say "4.3 gig capacity".

Riman,
Sounds like the drive is Fat16 which has a 2 Gig limit.
Trying selecting My Computer and right click on the C Drive. What does it show?

Sounds like a BIOS problem. You may need to upgrade your motherboard BIOS to see a larger drive. Hope this helps.

Well, I could be wrong, but that 2 Gb sounds like the old DOS/FAT16 limit, that is to say, the hard drive was setup without large disk support. Open a DOS window and enter:
fdisk
then choose (4) 'status'
To check - you may have an 'undeveloped' partition. To correct this, you may have to start over (fdisk, format, reinstall). Post back with fdisk status.

That's weird...when I click on My computer like you suggested, that pie chart displays the correct value's for my hard drive. It is FAT32.
If I go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Drive Space and view the properties there, it shows only 2.0 gigs capacity.
Well...thanks for the quick response. After seeing the correct value, I feel much better.

Summary: Which version of DOS did you boot with when you formatted that last time? If you used DOS5 thru DOS 7.x, and didn't use the /u flag, I believe that the format cmd uses some of the hard drive space to...
Summary: I should have asked, but was the hard drive space ever reported as 40 gig? There is a bios limitation at 8.4 gig and it could be your gateway can't see all the drive anyway. And are you sure it is a...
