i have a system using windows98se with a 20gb hard drive that is at capacity. I am going to replace the harddrive, and clone it to the new drive. Are there any size limitations or issues with windows98se concerning primary partition size of the drive? I.E. will I have any problems with a primary partition of 60 gb or higher?

Hi,
Windows 98 SE should recognise hard disks up to 137 GB without any problems. You may wish or need to check your motherboard and BIOS manual(s) to check what the hard disk size limit is.
Some motherboards will not accpt hard disks above a specific capacity. I have this problem with a Compaq laptop.
In reality 60gb should not be a problem. I had Win 98 SE runing on 120 GB hard disks with no problems on a 933Mhz Dell P3
The 137GB limit is the next "hurdle" you will have for hard disk capacity. XP SP 1 gets you past this.

Hi Ceri,
AFAIK, 98se fdisk will go to about 63GB.
The new fdisk will go to about 137GB.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

I recently upgraded my Win98SE system to 80GB with a Western Digital WD800. No problems and a good price (CAN$75). The nice thing about WD is the HDD comes with software (or you can download it from WD) which will format your disk and copy the old one bit for bit so you don't have to reinstall anything. It will also do your partitioning for you.

Summary: I also agree with the above responses. Win98 will not have a problem with the larger drive. The first limitation will be the bios which you can overcome by flashing it or using a drive overlay from ...
