Comment:

Hard drive not recognized after FDISK. Rebooted from floppy to check settings in BIOS. Setting for hard drive is AUTO, but shows "Primary IDE Master Not Installed. Ran a diagnostic utility for proper installation and received a message that BIOS extension support test failed and partition information was absent. Is there anything I can do to get this machine up and running or is it toast?

After you did FDisk, did you remember to set the primary partition?

Using:

BIOS extension support test failed

as the string/search-term in a google search will bring up a range of hits discussing the problem. One of them (IBM) lists three possible resolutions; flash the bios...; an adapter card may be faulty; the actual system board may have a problem.

Rather than duplicate here many of the hits I browsed, perhaps you can/will do your own trawl with the above string?

How large is the hard drive? Also make sure the IDE controllers are enabled in cmos.

Sometimes RAM can cause bios extension errors. How much do you have and did you recently add or change it?

This may work:

If it's on-board sound you should be able to get it on the motherboard manufacturer's site.
