hi -
what i was trying to do is to save my hard drive before bringing to compaq for fixing. it caused me some problems recently like knocking sounds ... well yes i looks like it is dying but may be defragmenting will help... and may be it is just a fan- who knows?
Cobra - thanks for the response

Hello:I heard if you wanna save a data on the HDD
you can wrap it with a plastic Bag and Keep it on the freezer for about 2 to 3 hours
and than you can Reconnected and Copy the information To another HDD
BTW:A defragement will not help if the HDD is going To die
peace

Right! Defrag will not help, in fact just the opposite. Get busy and save everything that you can before it quits completely.

Sounds like everyone is jumping the gun and solving the "problem" before the problem is even defined!
Nothing in your post suggests what is REALLY wrong -- "knocking noise inside processor" ??? What do you specifically mean?? (Processor has no moving parts -- and has nothing to do with the hard drive "problem" of defrag. Repost with more well-thought-out description of what is going on.

Better clarify the terminology, in rough terms at least:
Computer is the whole box full of chips, disks, wires and wriggly things. This can be opened, minor problems fixed and/or units replaced.
Processor (Central Processor Unit or CPU, inside the computer) is a big hot chip that can't be opened. The fan is not inside it, it is attached to it.
Both of the above are "hardware", rather than "software" which is programs (such as defrag). Mechanical problems can't be fixed by software.
I would always sort out hardware problems first, before worrying about software.
