i have installed a 40 gig samsung sp4002h hard drive and auto config. in cmos. I set it as a slave and fdisk and formatted but when i go to my computer it says it only has a storage capacity of 500 megabytes when it is a 40 gig hard drive. I am not having any problems witht he master drive though. I need alot of help please! i thought i might have needed to user config. in cmos except i dont know the head, cyln., and sect. #'s. I need as much help as i can get, i would really appreciate it. Thanks

Also what is the cpu in your computer? Most 486's and below and even a few older pentiums would not recognize a drive larger than 500 meg.

When U run fdisk the, first thing it asks U is......Do you want to enable Large Block Addressing ...LBA... make sure there is a Y in the box before you hit enter. You will have to use fdisk to delete that partition and then repartition it...

If your BIOS does not see that drive as a 40GB drive you will need to use a drive overlay software such as Easy BIOS.

Better also check the installation specs on drive. I have a Samsung 40g drive that will recognize only the end connection on an EIDE cable. I scrounged the drive from an HP and found the cable so labeled too. I even switched cables and found that any other configuration was dead. I really like the drive, but it is a real pain to install that way because I have to use an adapter in one of the upper 5 1/2" racks to mount the 3 1/2" HD there instead of the normal internal 3 1/2" racks below in order to use the other EIDE connection on the cable.

Howard, you're probably using a CS cable. For a regular 40-wire cable each connection is wired the same. That's why the only way to distinguish the drives is with the jumpers.

When i went to fdisk the drive it did not give me the option of running LBA or fat36 ( i cant remember the exact name i think it is fat36) it just brought me to the screen with the 5 options on it. Also in cmos the auto config. recognizes it as 8064 megabytes but in my computer it recognizes it as 500 megabytes as i have already told you. Finally it is an older computer, it is a personal computer in my room that i recieved for free and i am just trying to upgrade it. I cant exactly find the system processor, the computer itself is a gateway2000 p5-60 and uses the original processor. When i would go to system in the control panel it just says it uses a pentium processor.

The option for LBA is in cmos setup and not fdisk and it would be fat32 and not fat36.
IBM pentium 60's wouldn't recognize drives larger than 500 meg and maybe yours is the same--even though the bios sees it as 8 gig.
You'll need to use the overlay on the installation disk that came with the drive in order to use the entire 40 gig. The installation disk should be bootable but before running it you should run fdisk and remove whatever partitions you have on it now. Don't repartition--let the installation disk do it.
Then you'll need to reinstall windows or whatever software you previously had on it.

I now have one extremely big problem... the hard drive didnt come with an installation disk. Do you know of any sites that I can download it from? I ckecked the samsung site but didnt find anything, i am gonna go recheck in a little bit to see if they have it on their site.
~Aaron

I would think they'd have it on their site as it's very common for a bios not to recognize the entire capacity of the drive. Maxtor and Western Digital have theirs, but it may be written only for their drives. But if you can't find anything with Samsung, you might try other manufacturers.

ok, i after checking a second time i was able to find the downloadable program disk manager disk go! which is the program that is supposed fix the capacity limits. I was also able to find the correct parameter chart. The only thing i have left to do now is actually do it all. I am praying that this works.

ok, after running everything i have it recognized in "my computer" as 40 gigs. I used the "Disk Manager DiskGo" program i downloaded from samsung. The next question is how do i get a program i want to install to install on the slave (d drive). I would put the cd rom and click setup but it wouldnt give me the option to install on the d drive. my c drive is full so it would always say youy have run out of room on c drive. I hope someone understands what i am saying here, i find it a bit complicated to explain, lol

If it doesn't give the option on which drive to install it, you're usually stuck with the c: drive. It will usually default to the program files folder on the c: drive.
Sometimes you can specify the drive on which you want it installed by adding the drive letter after the installation command. For example if the command to install the program is 'install' the you could try going to the run line and typing:
e:\install d:
and return. Where e: is the drive the installation program is on (in this case the cdrom) and d: is the drive on which you want it installed. This won't always work, so don't be suprised if you get an error message or if the drive specification is ignored and it installs on c: anyway.
You should consider copying the old drive to the new. The software you downloaded for the drive should have that option. After copying you could change jumpers on the drives, making the new drive c: and the old drive d:
