Hi

Got an old Seanix Technology machine that is supposed to have windows 95 on it.
When I turn the power on, the machine can't find the drives.
I get the error, "Hard Disk(s) Fail (80)"
The machine has been in storage for about three years, so I replaced the CMOS battery with no change.
There is a CDrom, one HD, and a floppy drive.
When I go into the BIOS, I can see the floppy but no HD or CDRom. I have set the BIOS to auto-detect the drives but this has not helped.
I have tried booting with both a win95 and a win 98 boot floppy but still get the same error.
I borrowed a HD from a friend and swapped it into the machine and it was not detected either.
I have tried new IDE cable with no change.
I have removed and reseated all the cards in the motherboard with no change.
I am probably missing something simple here, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks

Joey

Well, Joey, it sounds like the hd controller has died. Did you try setting the hds, sectors and cylinders manually in User? Maybe that would work. Some of those old BIOS's were finicky. Is the hd controller built into the mainboard, or is it a ISA/PCI add-in board? If it's an add-in you might be able to locate a replacement, either here or on eBay. Shouldn't cost much. Taint worth much. Good luck. :)

Thanks for the reply

The HD controller is an add-on card.
I have tried configuring the sectors, etc. manually with no luck there either.
Any ideas on getting the floppy to work?

The bios on the machine may not see a HD larger than 540 meg. Manually enter these settings:

cylinders 1024
heads 16
sectors 63

That's for a 540. Also make sure it's connected and jumpered properly.
