Subject: Hard disk not detected by BIOS!
OS: Win 98 Se/ Win xp pro
CPU/Ram: 850/128
Comment:

am runing Win98 with following Configuration:

GB Hard disk (Seagate)
128 RAM
850MHz Processer
and gunineintel Processer

My problem is suddenly my machine stopped booting. I got different err message like "disk err.., " "press F1 to continue" and "searching for boot record... not found..." etc.

After that I thought may be my hard disk is crashed and it will not work .. so I took it out and installed in another (just to retrive the data..in case if that was unusable) but in another pc it worked fine... After that I again tried to install it in my own and it failed again... what could be wrong?

My hard disk seems ok but when I went to BIOS it is not detecting it ?

Beside that: when ever I switch on my pc.. the CD Rom inidicating lights keeps on lighiting (not blinking) and never goes off.

Can anyone help me?

Thanking in advance!
Dilip

Hi Dilip,

Sounds like a CDROM problem.

Disconnect all drives except that Seagate and see what BIOS says.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Be sure to set the jumpers correctly. If the CDrom was on the same cable you may need to change the jumpers.

A cable connected upside down to the cdrom drive will often cause the light to stay on.

Hi Dilip,

It sounds like your hard drive may be going bad. Do you have a complete backup? If not, don't take any chances; do it as soon as possible. If you are able to read it on another computer then I would go ahead and copy all the files to another HDD or to CD-R (or CD-RW) before doing anything else. At a minimum, make a copy of the most important files.

By the way, the same thing happened to me two years ago. I had to buy a new hard drive.
