I've been a bad boy.. :(. I shut down my computer the improper way and now I can't get it to work. I am trying to reinstall windows 98 but I keep getting an error with Scandisk that a certain cluster has an error and then it just stops there so I can never move on to install 98. I think it won't let me fix the error because a file is needed which I belive could be fixed if I could reinstal windows 98!! But I can't do that, is there anyway I could bypass scandisk to install, or reinstall anyfiles that might be needed for scandisk without installing the whole OS again? I also know it has been saying certain files aren't there, I don't remeber their names excatly but they end with .sys or something along that line, ill post it up after I remeber how to get it to show me again :P. Thanks very much for your help and time!!

More info on the problem, there is nothing wrong with my FAT's but the problem seems to be in the "File directory structure" And the thing I said about the .sys file should be ignored, that had to do with a different hard disk that is now working but it just 1.5 G's and only had song files on it.

With ur 98 setup disk run only scandisk first and see if it could remove the errors, do remember to run surface scan. take time depending on hdd space.

Thats the problem, im sure surface scan could also fix it, but it never gets there! It always freezes when it is checking the File directory structure (I left it running all night, no progress) and never gets to surface scan. I have both my windows 98 CD and boot disk, im sure I will be able to get past this with the right help, thanks guys!

Maybe I can be of assistance...When you run Scandisk, run the Thorough type of test, and make sure the box is checked to automatically fix errors...this takes a long time to rum, but it will isolate the offending cluster, so no more data can be written to it...try that and see if it works...good luck, SOC

The hard disk drive probably has bad sectors, thus a high likelyhood of hard disk drive failure.

Hmm, seems like I might just need to give up and get a new one. Because scandisk can take care of the problem itself.. :(. If I have to resort to that, anyways I could save my stuff because I had some hard work on there..
