Trying to get Might & MAgic: World of Xeen to work properly on my DOS game machine.
For the most part, it runs fine, except it freezes anytime there is a sound effect that lasts longer than 1 second--usually voice clips. As a result, I'm forced to turn off the sound effects in this game if I want to play it. This is highly irritating.
The MIDIs in the game, on the other hand, work fine and pose no problem.
My sound card is an AWE64 Gold. Most other DOS applications I own run fine--Lemmings, Simlife. However none of these have any sound effects that last for any period of time.
Dinosaur Adventure 3D, which also uses voice sound effects, also hangs the way Xeen does.
Running the applications from DOS mode does not solve the problem.
Here are my config.sys and autoexec.bat for your perusal.
CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe I=B000-B7FF

DEVICEHIGH=C:\AWE64\CTMMSYS.SYSAUTOEXEC.BAT
D:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.exe
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G

SET DIRCMD=/O
SET TEMP=C:\PBTOOLS\WINTEMP
SET WINPMT=[WINDOWS] $P$G
SET CTCM=C:\AWE64

c:\logochan.exe

The fact that it happens in DOS too makes it sound a whole lot like hardware to me.
Probably a long shot but try cleaning the edge connectors of the sound card with a pencil eraser then taking card in an out a few times to clear any tarnish off the socket.

I have actually found other people who have had this problem with, specifically, an AWE64 Gold and a P166. As yet I have found no solutions, though. I keep a very clean system and I have 2 AWE64 cards, both of which I have tried. I believe this is a software/settings issue. :) Thanks though. I will try dusting the contacts one more time.

Dunno, but if it's software/settings the clue has to be that it is something common to both DOS & Windows.

I notice that you have installed drvspace. Are you running a compressed volume? This puts a tremendous load on file access.

I am not running any compressed volumes, no. Besides that, the games are installed on a 7gig slave...

If you're not running drvspace, you don't require that line
That's quite the DOS configuration - one thing you might try is running the game from Windows without autoexec.bat or config.sys, or else use a simplified autoexec.bat (or PIF for the game) containing only the SET BLASTER statement
Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stones. But a collection of facts is not more a science than a heap of stones is a home
