hangs at slash screen

I upgraded my pentium III from 450Mhz to 1.2ghz and change the setting in FBS in the bios to match the processer speed as instructed. When I booted my computer it hangs at the windows slash screen. It boots up normal up until the windows slash screen. After several reboots, I just left it on after it hangs at the slash screen. I returned 15mins. later and now it's on the desk top with no icons and the hour glass is frozen. If I change it back to the 450mhz, it performs without prolems. How can I get it to work with the 1.2ghz processor?

What Motherboard (Make and model) are you using?
Does your PC boot normally to the Desktop in Safe Mode?
If there is a BIOS Setting for "Optimal Peformance", try resetting to that option and Reboot?

I have a PPchip M758 socket 370 motherboard. It will not boot to the safe mode. After I select to bootup in safe mode, it goes to the windows splash screen and hangs. I have tried setting the Bios to "optimal Performance" with no change in the results.

That board supports P3 up to 1130 Mhz. How did you set the FSB and multiplier?

I have not tried this, but it might work if you have manually chosen the Wrong CPU speed.
Press the Page Up key while the system is booting and a default setting will replace the incorrect CPU setting.
