hi,
I recenetly had a hacker problem and i decided to reformat the drive. After doing so, while windows 98 is loading up a message would come up saying "you are missing some of the system.ini files"..these files are:
1) vnetsup.vxd
2) vredir.vxd
3) dfs.vxd
4) vnetbios.vxd
5) msnp32.dll

i tried copying the files on a disk and then reinstalling..didnt work. I decided to ignore and after awhile i realized that he could get back in. Does anyone know a better or more advancded way to reformat???

i dont think reformatting your drive will stop a hacker, i would be concerned with your tcp/ip settings and file sharing, or setting up a firewall...are you still getting errors? were the errors before or after reformating?

Reformatting will not keep the hacker out. What firewall, antivirus and antitrojan program do you use? If you are very carefull you can usually get by with just a firewall and antivirus. If you know or think you have a trojan, it requires an antitrojan program. Antivirus programs are very limited in detecting and removing trojans. There are several trojan programs; TAUSCAN, PEST PATROL, TROJAN REMOVER, BOCLEAN, TDS, most have a 30 day trial period. The one free one is SWATIT from LOCKDOWN CORP, it does not run in real time like the others. All the best!

All the files you are missing refer (seemingly) to drivers for hardware.

Have you checked Device manager for problems
with specific hardware? (vxd indicates this will be the problem.)

When you format, you need to install the hardware correctly too, In device manager
determine which hardware requires drivers
etc, and install as required, either from the original drivers installation disk or
download required drivers from
www.drivershq.com

i had zonealarm pro and norton antivirus 2000...well what about initally was that he just completely wipped out norton...so on startup it would go to the log on screen and just freeze....i reformatted and then all the missing files appeared...i reformatted once again but installed windows 2000 instead...i installed blackice and norton 2002.....the norton sheild was disabled again..i tried to reinstall but an error came up.....i restarted the computer and then next thing i notice an error screen pop up saying that their was error and that i should run chkdsk /f and should check for virus...problem was thati couldnt even get back into windows....so once again i reformatted thinking that the hacker left something in my computer for easy access...i installed 98 again and those files are still missing.....i got some programs running and the computer was just acting weirdly...more files would be missing...

Hi Tim,

All of those problems have to do with your network. The .vxd problems are do to
dial-up-networking.

Here is a link to correct all of those.

Here is another on the msnp32.dll.
To correct this remove Client For Microsoft Network in the Control Panel>Network.

MSNP32.DLL

sounds to me like you really need to do a full low-level format, and then you MUST use anti-virus and firewall protection. Computer Associates is very good for this.

It doesnt sound like a hacker problem to me, Sounds more like some bad hardware. Test your RAM and your hard drive. use NDD and run a surface test or a thorough scan disk.

What e-mail are you using? The Klez virus and a few others have been know to damage Norton to the point of no return causing the PC to lock up at boot up because of not being able to load the corupted EXE file.

If you are using a firewall such as (we own you after you install me, do not try to uninstall me) Zonealarm. Then a hacker would have a hard time getting in your system unless there is a Trojon on your system that you gave internet access to.
