I am using an accounting programm that used to run under DOS. To be able to use it I have to reboot in DOS-mode. When I finish working I restart in Windows mode again and shutting down.
In some cases when I break this cycle and shut off the computer while in DOS mode, I cannot set the computer to start in GUI mode again.
I found out a while ago that if you tap certain bootfiles (such as dblspace.bin, msdos.sys, etc.) with the attrib command, while on DOS mode, you can make OS boot to GUI mode again.
I have to say that when running in GUI mode the two basic startup files are renamed to .DOS or .WIN (which one is correct, honestly I cannot say). Many thanks for your responses

from the windows GUI, if you restart in MSDOS mode, to get back to windows GUI, you have to type exit and press enter. if you shutdown while in MSDOS mode, the computer will restart in the mode that you shutdown, i.e. MSDOS mode.this i beleive, cannot be changed.
however, by making some modifications to msdos.sys you can make the computer ALWAYS start in MSDOS mode.in such a situation, to start windows you type win and press enter. also, in such a situation, when you shutdown the windows GUI, you will be back at the DOS prompt.however, to see the DOS prompt after exiting windows, you will have to remove the files logow.sys and logos.sys from the c:\windows directory
you can get info about editing msdos.sys from

boot to dos (or windows gui) - your choice; locate/edit the msdos.sys to allow a dos boot as normal...; details at:

Then as above (in post-1) type " win " (n " ") at the prompt to start windows gui...

Just a minor point about powering on again after shutting down from a Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
This might be something that varies with machines because when I power this machine on again after the above, it hesitates for a about 20-30 seconds at the C prompt then restarts Windows normally.
