I have an old PC i am setting up to play around with. It has a PCI video card problem. When I boot it shows the DOS screens with no error messages and I get the Win95 splash screen then the screen goes black for 10 seconds with a single cursor flashing in the upper left then I get a signal error like my video card is busted. Have looked in th BIOS but can find no setting to remedy this. Any Ideas

Can you start Windows in safe mode?

Have you tried placing the video card in a different PCI slot and see what happens then?

Describe the 'signal error' that makes you think the video card is busted.

dave,
I have 5 PCI slots and i did move the card around. Each time it would boot normally and I would use the PC. But whenever I would reboot then I would get the "signal error". Now i have run out of fresh PCI slots

I tried safe mode but it tells me a himem.sys file was detected as unreliable and that a XMS driver is not installed

I assume then the signal error message is generated by the monitor. I doubt the problem is the video card.

You say it'll boot OK once but when you reboot you'll get the message. A reboot as in 'restart' from the shutdown menu or ctrl-alt-del (warm boot) can sometimes not allow the PCI bus to reset on some machines.

That's my best guess given what you've said. To verify whether or not it is the card you could alway swap it with another and see if that changes anything.

Take a look at this info:

Might be a memory problem, and removing, cleaning up, and reseating the memory modules might do the job.

Could also try removing CMOS battery for a period of time and then re-inserting it.

So why would the monitor and video card be doing their jobs until I get the second splash screen and the bam "Signal Error" & black screen. Also the PC is pluged into a KVM switch and the other PC's are doing fine off the monitor. Plus originally I would switch the PCI slot and it would work until I reboot. And no warm booting. The PC shuts down properly but will not come back up as far as the monitor/graphics card is concerned.

Somewhere in the process of the OS loading, some file, command or driver is causing a problem that results in the computer shutting off. (I assume it's shutting off--or is it just blanking out while the machine continues to run?) Before windows loads there are no conflicts so everything seems OK.

As FZWG points out, RAM could be a problem as that's one reason himem.sys doesn't load. There's some ram checks you can download that should tell you if that's part of the problem.

Unless it's the video drivers, temporarily swapping the card with another should tell you for sure if it's the card or not. You could also try reinstalling the drivers when it's working to verify if that's a problem or change the adapter to a default 'pci video adapter' so windows will use different drivers.

Another thing, unlike ISA, moving a PCI card causes the OS to reconfigure it. Maybe that's why it works when you move the card to a different slot. You might want to check cmos again and see if there are any alterations you can make to the PCI bus.
