Check your hardware to make sure your machine is designed to run that program. Then check the manufacturer's website. They should have a list of known problems, support forums, and/or e-mail support.

Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and the latest Direct X installed. But check the games minimum requirements first and make sure you are up to speed. good luck :)

the support won't work, I've been to a lot of places on the net saying they don't help at all, all they say is its something wrong with the computer. An incredible amount of people have problems with this game. I have all the latest drivers. Its the game.

Although it was faster after i overclocked (dangerous i know but what else can i do) my amd k6-2 450. Sorry about GTA3 not working, it's a kick-ass game, im gunna go buy it for ps2 :)

My GTA 3 freezes in midgame. The graphics just die but the sound goes on, and all I can do is press the reset button on my computer. It is really annoying, sometimes I only get to play 5 seconds before it happens but sometimes (after rebooting like 10 times) I get to play 10 minutes or so. This makes it really hard to pass the levels.

Does anyone have a clue what to do? I have the latest drivers and everything, my graphics card is a GeForce2 64MB and i run Win98. The only thing I have not tried is reinstalling Windows...

Try downloading the 'Detonator Destroyer' program (search on Google for it) and following the directions on the readme file for it. I guess sometimes when you upgrade your Nvidia drivers it leaves a little of the old driver behind, the destroyer will wipe the old files out and let you get a fresh install of the new drivers.

I really hope this helps ya guys out, because this game is great! :)

I have rung up Take 2 and they sent me an e mail of things to do but so far iv'e tried a few with no luck so i'm trying this destroyer thing. fingers crossed

I have tried formatting my computer and installing Win2k instead, but the problem still remained. And Win2k was so crappy overall that I had to format one more time and install Win98 again. And it also feels better to use a legal software! I had borrowed the Win2k just to see if it would work better with GTA3 but it didn't... =(
I'll try the Detonator destroyer, but I doubt that it'll help, b/c as I've mentioned I've tried formatting so it should not be any old stuff leaving behind...

Good news fellows!
Now I *might* have found out what to do. The problem for me may have been that the GeForce2 is a 4xAGP card and my motherbord has only a 2xAGP slot. I got the advice to change the AGP speed of the card from Auto to 1x or 2x. There is no big loss of performance at all and now I am using my card in 1x.
I don't know for sure if it works because I have only had time to try the game twice since changing this. And it has not frozen in midgame, but after playing like 1 hour it frooze when it should change map from Portland to Staunton. And that could as well be a completely different problem.

So I recommend you trying to set your card to 1x or 2x AGP to see if it helps. I did this using the Geforce Tweak Utility (download from guru3d.com), but it may also be possible to change it in other ways.

Please tell me if this solved your problems!!!

I tried to install my GTA 3, and halfway through the install it froze. However, I try to continue the install, but it constanty prompts me to uninstall it, yet does nothing when the install window comes up. Anyone know how I can manually uninstall it, and try to re-install it? email me please!

Bad news again...

Sorry to tell you, but it seems like lowering the AGP speed change was not the right solution to the problem. At first I thought it worked because I could play the game for quite a while, but now it is freezing all the time just like it used to do.

Does anyone have a clue what to try now?

My GTA3 works fine until you get into situations where lots of things are blowing up at one time. Then the game just freezes. It sux cuz I like to incite the cops alot and then go crazy but once I pull out the machine gun and start shooting, the game freezes. Other then that it's fine.

Peter Parker!!!
After you have installed the game you should not use the first CD anymore. Just insert the second CD and after that you start the game from the link that it has put on your Start menu.
If this does not work, try to update the game to version 1.1, the file is rather small and it removes lots of the CD checks, so this will probably solve your problem. Download it from the submitted URL!

This Should Help You All. I just Got GTA3 it played but had no writing text, so I downloaded the Q306676 patch from microsoft. It updates some drivers for people who use XP and have a Nvidia G-force video card. Ok now my next problem was that it kept freezing up, just like you all discribed. Sometimes it was 1-2 seconds up to a few minutes, and twice it was so bad that my windows shut down. I also noticed that my cd-rom was starting and stopping when it would freeze up. Thats was my problem, my cd-rom reads at 56x speed but thats to fast for GTA3. So I put the game in my cd-rom burner that reads at 40x and it playes fine. If you only have one cd-rom then you could check out http://cdromtool.hopto.org its a Naiobrin software that allows you to set & control your cd-rom spin up and down speeds. It doesn't work for all cd-rom's and I still havent tried it so use caution. Don't forget to enter gunsgunsguns & giveusatank cool cheats. Question I heard some of the cheats can't be turned off it you save the game. How does this work? Say I enter one of those cheats and save the game in file 3 of 8. So now the cheat that can't be turned off, is it only in the file 3 or does it effect all saved games?

If your cd-rom is not the problem and your video card sucks make sure you read the read-me file with the game. Follow there instructions for smaller screen size 800x600 16 bit color, wide screen ect. There are even patches at GTA3.com web site under troubleshooting. One takes out all the extra stuff like the paper that is on the streets. This is an option if your video card can only handle so much. Just make sure your computer meets the Minimun requirments or forget about playing.

Back to the beginning of this thread:

"after the intro movies it shows a bunch of peices of pictures and freezes."

The image freezes. When pressing up/down I can hear the button sounds though. Odd thing is that I've played the game with no freezing problems for about a month. It just started doing this yesterday.

Any help appreciated.

I've never had that problem Ahmed. I assume you have already checked your cd for scratches and finger prints. Maybe someone elso can help you and if not, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling. If you do chose to uninstall you will still have your saved game files in another folder. Remember to run scan disk, defragment and virus check often.
