Comment: Can someone (preferably using W98SE & IE6 SP1 with all updates) take a look at this website for me please: Webdeveloper Just down the page there should be 5 small animations. On my machine the fourth one (jazz.gif) just shows the red box with the X in it. If I save the web page and get the file jazz.gif out of the folder it then opens fine in IrfanView offline. If I switch .gif associations back to IE then I get the red box when double clicking the file offline too. I can't see enough difference in this file to, say, javawork.gif so I'm wondering if there is some quirk in IE updates. Thx DerekW

Reply: (edit)Hi Derek: I usually use my Netscape browser, and all the images worked fine with that. But when I went back using my I.E.6 SP1, I couldn't see any of the gifs. All five of them had red x's in the boxes. There were quite a few red x's all over the page too. Hope this helps. Webacon

Reply: (edit)Webacon Possibly you are not set to "show pictures" in IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced then under Multimedia heading. No matter, lets hope someone else has a go. The main thing I'm after is whether folk get ALL the images or whether jazz.gif is the only one missing. Thx for trying. DerekW

Reply: (edit).... more. I now see that this is a pretty minor problem. I've just been through their alphabet of gifs and only about 1% show that red X box. If anyones interested they are: bugmove.gif guestan.gif peep.gif I'm still curious, so would be pleased if someone with 9x & IE6 SP1 can see what they get on the link in my original post. DerekW

Reply: (edit)FORGET IT FOLKS - I've found problem. Did a bit of file swapping. The file mshtml.dll was replaced by an IE Update, giving me version 6.00.2800.1555 I replaced this with an earlier version 6.00.2800.1491 This cures problem but now I need to decide if it produces a security risk.... Thx anyway DerekW

Reply: (edit)Derek, I ran the basic win98FE & SE for several years without any Microsoft updates whatsoever, from the time I bought it until a few months ago when I switched to XP (kicking and screaming :-) ). The only time I developed a bad guy, was a couple of times when I accidently ran the system without Zonealarm running. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Reply: (edit)Derek: Just for the heck of it, I went back to that site and all pictures showed up just fine this time. And "show pictures" was always enabled in my I.E. Just thought I'd let you know. Webacon

Reply: (edit)ham30 Thx - comforting news. webacon Thx - My guess is that you never put "Cumulative Security Update for IE6 SP1 (KB916281)" on the system. That's the one that put in the grubby mshmtl.dll file, as far as I can tell. DerekW

Reply: (edit)He Derek, Webacon, ham30, hi everyoneI like to believe you are so right, again. :-) Before installing KB916281 on to one of my other Win98 boxes with IE6 SP1 etc., I had mshtml.dll version 6.00.2800.1505 and jazz.gif showed just fine. I made a copy of the file, mshtml.dll, and proceeded with installing KB916281 after a reboot I went back to the Windows Explorer looked up the mshtml.dll version and as you suspected/predicted found it to be 6.00.2800.1555. Next step obviously was reopen the particular page, and like at your end jazz.gif failed to be displayed. :-| Replacing the erroneous version of mshtml.dll with my known to be good copy resolved the issue. What does strike me is that both your working copy nor my good copy and the faulty one don't show, or I cannot find them, at M$ DLL Help database. %-) Best Regards and Wishes, The Count, Co-webmaster of mesich.com

Reply: (edit)The Count Problem sorted (better). I realised that if I just binned mshtml.dll I could then pop back any of my saved IE SP1 Updates and get a new mshtml.dll file. I did this several times and found that I couldn't solve the problem without going back three updates. As it turned out the file you mentioned (6.00.2800.1505) was the last one that fixed it. This came down with IE6 SP1 cumulative update 883939. So, I've put back the latest IE cumulative update and swapped to your mshtml.dll file version. That's as up to date as I can get so I'm not going to worry too much about security. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Hi Derek, Webacon, ham30, hi everyoneDerek thanks for taking the time, and share it with one and all, to figure out at which point the IE updates go sour thus which cumulative update still is okay to install containing the properly working version of mshtml.dll. For the time being I will be keeping a couple of copies my good copy of mshtml.dll. :-) Best Regards and Wishes, The Count, Co-webmaster of mesich.com

Reply: (edit)The Count Yes, and if you save a copy of the mshtml.dll that doesn't cause the problem you can still get the latest update (which does many other things) and then simply swap the mshtml.dll file back to the earlier one. It goes in fine from Windows as long as IE is not running. DerekW

Reply: (edit)You can check by going to that link in my original post. All you need to know is whether all of the little animations are showing. The one that fails is jazz.gif It will be a bit late if you've now "installed" the new Updates, unless you saved your original copy of mshtml.dll first. If by any chance you saved an earier update "as a file" then you can put mshtml.dll in the bin (with IE closed) then run that old update again. That will only replace mshmtl.dll because it will ignore the later files. You then copy the replacement file somewhere else and go back to Windows Update and accept any IE updates it offers. When you've got them just replace the file with the one you saved. Sorry, that's a bit long winded so I hope you get my drift. Usually updates don't save backups of the files so it's about the only way forward. There is an even older version of that file around, so if necessary I can Google around for you. Final alternative (simplest of the lot), I can send you the latest file that still lets all the gifs run. It's nearly 3M but I'm game if you are - I can get your address by clicking your name. You then simply replace the file. DerekW
