Comment:

hey, I have a small hard drive and it seems that anything under 100 mb I will get a system message "You have run out of space on drive c. To free space..."

How can I get rid of the message without uninstalling programs and such.

Right now i have 30 mb of free space and before I had 70mb; and I am sure that it must be around 100mb that the sytem will stop sending the message.

Thanks again.

When you are that close any activity will cause it to run out of space.

Type msconfig in the Run box and see if there are any background activities you can either dispense with or work from a shortcut as and when required.

Make sure that temporary internet files and so forth are kept right down (set IE to clear them on closure).

Other than that I see no other way forward than to either offload programs or put in a larger HD if your BIOS will take it.

Well, there's always Linux running from a CD I suppose.....

The swap file is another factor. You can go to CONTROL PANEL--SYSTEM--PERFORMANCE--VIRTUAL MEMORY and reduce its maximum size or even disable it, although your PC will really slow down.

Another thing is to add this line:

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

to the 386[Enh] section of your system.ini file. That keeps the OS from using the swap file until it's run out of available RAM.

With your P-133 you probably don't have much RAM so making the above change may not matter all that much. On this PC I had 128 meg and the swap file was usually at zero until I got on the internet. Then it would balloon. I put in another 128 and now it seems to always stay at zero. So if at all possible add more RAM. Other than that, as Derek mentions, a larger hard drive is the way to go.

ya thanks Derek

This thing does not even have a cd, just a fdd

I just got a homeplug today so at least now I have a net connection.

Thanks for taking the time out to answer my problem. I don't know why sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. But I did some of the changes you recommended.

.... there's a program out there called CrapCleaner which gets good reviews. It takes out all the unecessary stuff that builds up (logs, temporary files and so on).

Hi, In addition to all the good info you already have, try to maintain about 20 to 25% free space on any HD. The programs need space to breath.

Good Luck, Jim

I think maybe you would benefit from some fresh air, "Good Luck Jim"

Hi, This is for JBOY. When you accquire over 60 yrs of electronics training and experience and 30 yrs of tech support for a national service department then you may make snide remarks about me and others. I also note that this is still a "FORUM". I Suggest that you look up the word. You may learn something helpful.
