Subject: Get into WIN 98 - bad boot.ini fileOS: windows 98CPU/Ram: 32mbModel/Manufacturer: Compaq |
Comment: I was trying to upgrade a Compaq Presario 4834 with a PII 266mhz to a PIII 450mhz. The board only recognizes up to 300mhz - how the jumpers are set - and I tried to install Windows XP while 98 was still present. The install froze, so I decided to halt. Now, the setup wrote to the boot.ini file. I edited it to how I thought it should be, but removed the wrong bit. I have the old boot.ini file renamed on the C drive, but can't delete the old and rename the true one. I know there's a way to import files into the computer from DOS, or command prompt. I need detailed instructions on how to do this... how do I rewrite the file or make the true, renamed one, the right one again?

Reply: (edit)Yes, there are all sorts of DOS commands - but no 'import' to my knowledge (and certainly no boot.ini in Win98) ren (REName)? del (DELete)? move (.... )? Assuming the file isn't write-protected. Probably a simpler (WinXP) solution We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit).. if he wants to edit boot.ini, I'd guess XP would be the ultimate goal - and that makes the connection to Win9x fairly thin. If that's the case, probably can affect some sort of fix by means of the XP CD's repair console (or whatever the kids are calling it) If 98's been overwritten, not much hope of fixing that unless the backup option was chosen, or if a dual boot was being setup We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit)It might be easier if "sireel1111" was to simply disable the XP boot-loader and return to a '98 only boot system - initially. Afterwhich discover why XP failed to go in properly... and then start again with its installation? To enable (restore to) a boot to '98 "only"... boot with a '98 boot-disk, and at the a: prompt type: sys c: and press the Enter/return. Remove boot-disk and reboot (now only) to '98. Then verify system is OK for XP - run the readiness util? Get all drivers etc. Ensure to run setup via either a CD boot, or the 6 floppies + CD; rather than from within '98 itself. Perhaps before starting afresh with XP, delete all files/folders from failed intallation; including the boot.ini.
