I am trying to update the color palette on an old AMD K-5 100mhz system 31mb ram. It is currently running Win98 after I reformatted the harddrive. However, afterwards it will only display 16 Colors, I dont have the option to choose other colors, and it did before the reformat. I dont have any of the original cds for the original drivers. Also I am not sure on the display drivers for the video card, so Im unsure on what to look for.
I am wondering if there is a generic or universal driver that I can use (display adapter?)to update the colors so that I can have more colors.
Any help would be much appreciated.

well.... i need to know something.. open the case up and see if the video card is built into the motherboard OR a separate card. if it is a separte card, get all the numbers from it and go into the drivers forum on the left and post there.. they should be able to help. and if it is built on the motherboard, you are going to have to go to the motherboard manufacturers site and get the drivers from them.
good luck
Tom

In other words there is no 'Generic' driver that will do the job. You must find the correct driver for your adapter.

Video Adaptors and Drivers:
The video resolution is controlled by the make and model of Video Adaptor installed in your PC (a Mfgr. function). Windows is installed through the courtesy of Microsoft which could not possibly hope to provide drivers for the hundreds of video adaptors on the market. Windows installs a 'Generic Driver' which usually works but at LOW resolutions. Read on:
Subject: DisplayFirst check this:
Start>Run>Msconfig>Advanced
Uncheck "VGA 640x480x16"One of the following may indicate what type of Display Driver you have:
To determine Video Adaptor type:
1. Start\Run\dxdiag
Once this settles down, click the "display"
tab.2. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>(+)Components>Display
Be patient and eventually it may show the model of the Display Adaptor (plus much other info you may not want or understand.)
[You will get less information by:3. Right Click My Computer >Properties> Device Manager> (+) beside Display Adaptors]
Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers. Or go to:[If asked for a 'User Name', enter : drivers ]
{If asked for a password, enter: all ]You should be able to get it there. Bear in mind that you will still be limited by the Monitor hardware (picture tube) and the display adaptor (Video board or On-Board). If you cannot do better with the latest available video driver, you will have to spend some money.
To inspect/modify your display properties, go to:
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>SettingsNote 'Screen Area' and 'Colors'
If you can change the settings in "Colors' and 'Screen Area', you are in business. If not, you will need to buy a newer monitor and/or Display adaptor and download latest Video Driver.

problem has a tangent. is there a generic/universal driver which can be linked to a 16 bit microsoft application (dos extended) which allows the application to utilize the 32 bit video drivers supported by the Microsoft operating system (95,98, me, 2000, nt xp) currently running?
