I had to copy the DOS cdrom driver to my laptop hard drive to get the cdrom to work in order to clean install windows 98. My problem now is that the cdrom seems to be stuck with this DOS driver and will not work in Windows, only in DOS from the command line prompt. I would like to update the driver through device manager, but I can't remember what the proper cdrom driver would be to replace the DOS driver with. Can anyone tell me this?

Go to Device Manager
1. Is there an entry for CDROM at the top
2. Do you have any errors with Hard Disk Controllers
3. Click the Performance tab, does it say any drives are running in MS-DOS compatibility mode

Windows normally does not require a driver to run the CDROM.
Your problem may not be driver related.

If you have windows up and running, just remove the dos driver in config.sys and mscdex in autoexec.bat. Win98 should load his built in driver on the next boot.

I think Krystyna is right. I'm beginning to suspect Im experience intermittent read failures with my cdrom drive and it has noting to do with drivers. Got the thing off Ebay. Caveat emptor . . . or something like that.
