Geforce 2 mx400 compaq deskpro prob

I have a compaq deskpro pc with a compaq motherboard. My problem is i cant get my geforce 2 graphics card to work. When i turn my pc on it finds the pci vga card then installs the driver, then in the manual it says to restart the pc and install the nvidia drivers that are on the cd. So i did that, and now my computer stops just after showing the windows 98 logo. It doesnt crash becausre the text icon is still flashing, it just doesnt move from the black screen. If i restart it and select safe mode its ok but then i cant use the graphics card. If i uninstall the driver software my pc comes on as normal. Could someone please help.

if it is an agp card, the right specifications have to be typed in the bios, that means, the amount of memory the video card has, for instance 32MB or 64MB.

no its an pci card i think. Its a geforce 2 mx400 64mb card. Wot is 'dp'?. Do i need to have directx installed before i install the nvidia drivers? The drivers came with the graphics card on a cd, i think the cd was called 'start up', im not at my pc rite now so i can't really say.

It'd be best to install the highest directx version the card can use before installing the drivers but that shouldn't stop it from booting up. But then Compaq's have their own set of problems.
You might see if you can reserve an IRQ in cmos for VGA. Also check nvidia's site for driver upgrades.
