Reply: (edit)Yeah happens to me to, but not only in Office but also in IE (when trying to print) and more. I got it to work by removing my screensaver and some icons on the desktop. Believe it had something to do with RAMmemory, but don´t know. (The problem came back after a few months). Need more help!

Reply: (edit)The problem might be associated with your video card. I was having that problem and resolved it by replacing a 2M edo video card with a 4M edo video card. No more problem.

Reply: (edit)Looking through all the responses, Microsoft sucks!!! It seems to be more of a hardware issue that software. I am running 98. TechNet said Second Edition fixed it, wrong. They also gave a patch for "first edition" still not working. I have 40 pc that have the same config on all of them, then one day one box gets the error in all programs trying to print. I beleive it to be a RAM chip or video card issue. I have rebuilt the box (software) from ground up. Using different CD, re-downloading hotfixes and service packs. Still same thing. So it has to be hardware vs memory issue.

Reply: (edit)Go to C:\windows\system right-click gdi.exe and select Properties. If the version number is 4.10.98, 4.10.098, 4.10.1998, try to upgrade to 4.10.2222 or 4.10.2222a. It sound like the upgrade to Windows SE did not work corectly. 4.10.2222 is the version that comes with Win98SE. IF this fixes your problem please e-mail me, callen1@rochester.rr.com

Reply: (edit)I got an e-mail message that stated the following (refer to Response Number 10) -------------------------------------------- On December 29, 1999 you suggested a fix for the General Protection Fault in GDI.EXE, at: www.computing.net/window95/wwwboard/forum/5104.html. The fix worked. I was having problems printing a web page with my Internet Explorer and a couple of others in our office were having problems printing email off their Outlook Express 2000. Your suggestion helped a lot. --------------------------------------------

Reply: (edit)Check out this microsoft support page.http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q229/6/70.ASP?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB&FR=0 It acknowledges this problem. They have a new release of gdi.exe & gdi.dll. But you have to contact them to get it.

Reply: (edit)I have the same problem as Cathy (response 18). Win98 won´t start at all due to GDI.EXE error. Safe mode is not an option, the system crashes. Only DOS-mode can ben run. Before this problem occurred I noticed that in bootlog.txt the system indicated that there were problems loading TTF´s (fonts). Just like Bean (response 16) mentioned. So my guess is also that it is a font issue, maybe in combination with videoram. Before the crashes the system indicated a EMM/16M-error. I´m going to try a few of the options mentioned above, hoping to fix the problem. This Sucks !!

Reply: (edit)Bad news! I have installed ME (after a complete "nuke" of my system and installing Windows 98 SE first). If anything the problem is worse under ME than it ever was under SE. Anyone with any suggestions? (we should all band together and put a moratorium on all Microsoft products - this is getting to be beyond a joke)

Reply: (edit)The message I got said IE (ver 5.5) produced the gpf in gdi.exe. I suspect the problem has something to do with a system cap of 2Mb of video memory (running 800x600 in high color mode). Previously, to prevent the screen from hanging and crashing the system regularly, I had to reduce hardware acceleration for graphics (on Display menu in Control Panel) down to 1/3. I may need to add a video controller card with 4Mb memory or more. Anyone know if there are video cards for ISA slots?

Reply: (edit)I have had multiple "Blue Death Screens" with this GDI.EXE error message. I have it happen mostly when printing online. I have an HP820Cxi printer. I saw another GDI.exe error page mentioning [problems with HP 500 & 600 series printers, ADN yet another page refering top Adobe related issues (which I also run). I am running Win 98, and I am *&%#ing disgusted. ANYONE, Bueller? Bueller, Bueller?
