Game's won't load

I recently did a clean install from WinME to Win98 in hopes of resolving an issue with connecting to the internet that was OS related where all programs worked just fine, but when connecting to the internet, the computer would just freeze when the connection manager came up. All went well with only a few user related issues that came up during installation. Now the internet works fine, but half of the installed programs, specifically 3D games, freeze when I try to load them, but win98 doesn't freeze, and I can bring up the Ctrl+Alt+Del menu and the program is listed, but not listed as not responding. What can I do?
