Comment:

I have been getting alot of popups lately at random websites. At the top of the window in the blue area of the window it displays the name of the window (the place where it says "Computing.Net - Windows 9x Forum - Microsoft Internet Explorer" for example) it will say something like " High speed Internet - GAIN Gator". I have not willingly installed any GAIN Gator software and was woundering if this could be some sort of trojan which has infiltrated my computer.
Thanx.

run AD-AWARE you can get it free at www.lavasoft.com click for it to scan everthing and whatever it finds delete, by continuing putting a check in all boxes and continuing again. I have been using it for a long time it's safe to delete everything it finds. I never had any problem.

You must have installed Kazaa.

Kazaa is poison to your PC.

The makers of Ad-Aware maintain a list of known Spyware. You can check the list *before* installing junk. Also, top-quality Freeware sites do *not* distribute Spyware (NoNags and Son Of Spy Freeware, for instance). You should be more careful about what you download and install...

Get a free download of Xclean. It takes out Gator plus a lot of other stuff.

You can reinstall Kazaa to down load the files you want and then run xclean to take out the spy program. It is a progrram that utilizes up to 10% of your system for outsourced data processing. Run xclean and it takes out the spy program. But you must then reload kazaa to use it again.

I do this about once a week. Small pain in the but to get around the lack of Napster.

I strongly suggest using Adaware keep in mind that Adaware is updated constantly, it must be in order to keep up with the nonsense floating around.

I have tried using Ad-Aware to get rid of the Gator spyware stuff, but it always says the file is in use! How do I override this? Do I end task certain things in task manager or do something manually? I hate this software on my computer!

I'm having the exact same problem. I just found this board by searching on GAIN, hoping that someone else had the same problem and could tell me how to get rid of it. I'll try the Ad-Aware, but every time I try to manually delete GAIN's garbage, at least one file can't be deleted for the reason you stated. Doesn't this software technically qualify as a virus? There have to be some legal ramifications.

note the name of the file and then add this to the file c:\autoexec.bat:
del

now not only does the file get deleted when you next boot up but anytime should it pop up again!

that should be del (name of the file)

example: adaware says it cant delete tsadbot.dll in c:\win\system

so add in autoexec.bat

del c:\win\system\tsadbot.dll

simple!

Gator/GAIN sucks!! I just visited a website that displayed a popup message to the effect that I'd have to click the install button to install Gator/GAIN software if I wanted to receive popup ads. If not, click the X in the upper right hand window to avoid installing the software. Of course, I didn't want that sh!t so I clicked the little X to close the window (only other option being to "install" the software). Lo and behold, I later find out that Gator/GAIN popup ad software got installed ANYWAY!! What BS is that? I figured they gave the installation "choice" due to the recent lawsuit they fell victim to but to deceptively install their software anyway? That's just low! Now I have to find a way to remove their programs. Wish me luck...

I just got another advertisement about MY Computer program, please don't sent me any more garbage from GAIN/Gator. I tried out yourPrecision Time program and the GAIN popup ads started, the only way to clear them off your screen is to shut down. With Gator Corporation hookink up with GAIN popup advertising, you mise well kiss Gator goodbye. I killed all my programs that had anything to do with Gator and I'll never run another Gator program.
