I have a file in my start menu that I can't rename or delete. Error says file name too long to do anything. I used these instructions to get it off my desktop
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/128983.html
now I need help removing it from my start menu. Any help is greatly appreciated!

When I have a file that seems impossible to get rid of under Windows,I boot the computer with dos and with the path to the file I delete it with deltree. You can also check the registry for this file by using Regedit.Good luck.

Right click on your Task Bar.
Select properties.
Click the tab that says Start Menu Programs.
Click on remove.
Select the item you want to remove.
Select remove.

There are three ways to get rid of the shortcut in your start menu.
1) Via Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu, tab Advanced -> Remove.
Find the shortcut, select it and click on the Remove button.2) Boot into Safe Mode by pressing the [F8] or [Ctrl]key during the bootsequence, choose Safe Mode from the menu and follow the procedure as mentioned at option 1).
3) Boot into DOS Mode by pressing the [F8] or [Ctrl]key during the bootsequence, choose Command Prompt only Option from the menu (Option number 4 or 5 from the menu) and type in at the DOS prompt:
CD\Windows\Startm~1\Progra~1\subfolder[Enter]key
attrib -r -s -h *.*[Enter]key
del shortc~1.lnk[Enter]keySo far for the shortcut in your start menu, now for the target file or target-link of the deleted shortcut. This probably needs to be done in DOS too. So here we go, in DOS.
CD\target\folder[Enter]key
attrib -r -s -h *.*[Enter]key
del target file[Enter]keyReboot your system, or type CD\[Enter]key and then type win[Enter]key, to reload Windows.
N.B. Where it reads subfolder only applies if the shortcut is not located directly under Programs, where Explorer also resides.
The attrib command with the parameters -r -s -h, is to make sure that file/link is not set to read-only, system and/or hidden. If it was, with this command it isn't anymore.
Where it reads shortc~1.lnk is the name of the shortcut as you have discoverd through the method mentioned by you above. (Right click, properties)
Folders and files are typed with only the first six characters followed by ~1 in DOS.Post back.
