Comment:

During shutdown to restart after downloading a Windows Security Update, display froze at the Windows is shutting down page. When using power switch to turn off, page goes to Phoenix Bios disk manager page, showing extended memory being saved. At 100%, computer shuts down. When booting, it goes to the disk manager page again until 100% extended memory is saved, then it goes to the Windows is shutting down page and stays there. Start floppy of no avail. F10 or other key of no avail. Any suggestions.
Thanks,

Did you install the update or just download it?

Check the MSKB for the exact error message.

I'm not sure what's causing the problem but you may be able to get it going by restoring a previous registry.

Turn the computer on and before the OS would normally start to load, start tapping the F8 key. A boot menu should appear. Choose 'command prompt only'. At the c:\> prompt type:

scanreg/restore

and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem.

If it does boot up normally after that you may want to try reinstalling the update or you may want to leave it as it is.

Resolved problem by holding down the Fn tab and tapping the F8 tab while booting up. Screen went to Error notice and locked up. Removed battery (was on battery power) for 20 seconds and reintalled. Boot up was normal. All's well.
Thanks much.

Thanks for posting back. That wasn't a fix I would have expected.
