That message can mean that the monitor is not getting any signal from the PC (video adapter).
Ask him/her if he/she is getting the POST beep. If not, the PC is dead. Possible power supply or motherboard problem.

I assume the PC isn't dead if it gives a message on the monitor. This message can simply mean the monitor refresh rate is set too high and needs lowering. This can happen with older monitors so try borrowing a modern monitor - most can handle 85hz or higher refresh rates and adjust the refresh rate down in control panel > display before going back to the old monitor.

Brim, that message is generated by the monitor and not the PC.

Hi
Boot up into safe mode, this use's the the basic drivers and see if you can change the refresh rate.

"Brim, that message is generated by the monitor and not the PC."... Ham30, but usually only as a result of receiving a signal from the PC.

Nope, Brimm. You get that message on certain monitors if there is no signal. Other monitors give a 'no signal' message.
