im running win98 with 1.3ghz amd, 512mb ram, ati radeon 7000 64mb, 40gb maxtor, and when i play any computer game my computer will freeze. i took my computer to a pc repair shop and they said all my hardware was fine. i have tried almost every version of windows and have the same problem. there is no irq channel conflicts, i have tried updating directx and my video card drivers, and even tried playing games using software rendering, 3dfx, opengl, and direct 3d and it still freezes. when it locks up there is a lot of high pitched noises coming from my speakers. i dont know what else to do. someone please help!

Methinks your pc is running as hot as the desert sands. Get a heatsink/fan like the coolermaster all copper deal with the heat pipe and some good artic silver heat sink grease. My computer temp hardly ever runs about 35 C after doing this with an xp 1800 system. That noise is likely the motherboard alarming from such extreme temperatures as you may be running. May Allah keep your system cool.

You might check your CPU temp. Motherboard Monitor can be downloaded for free and is an excellent program for this purpose.
Your temps should run in the mid 40 C range. If you exceed 90 C your CPU will die. Things can get pretty flaky if you exceed 65 C.

i am using a volcano 5400 rpm fan for my cpu and i also have a system fan. i used a program called 'hardware sensors monitor' and heres the information it gave.
mainboard temp 95F, CPU1 60.8F, CPU2 132.8F
cooling fans power 5192RPM
voltages +12V +12.48V +5 +4.65V core +1.74V
i/o +3.25V -12V (blank) -5V (blank) aux +2.46V
the CORE and AUX are in danger it says and i dont know what a lot of those readings are for. what is cpu2? thnx for the replies but can you please help me some more?

Your CPU temp is 56 C which is a little high but not likely to cause your performance issues. You could bring it down further if you CAREFULLY remove your HSF, remove the thermal tape from the bottom of the HSF, and replace it with thermal paste.
Your core voltage is 1.74 volts. Nominal for this CPU is 1.75 volts so your right on the money there.

I had the same problem exactly. I solved it by reducing the hardware acceleration on the SOUND card down to "basic" (one notch above "none"). Good luck!
