Freezes After Startup;Long Scandisk

After having gone into Safe Mode (just to see that holding down CTRL key works) and then going back to normal mode, my computer suddenly started hanging up right after all the icons loaded on the desktop. Then I would get a Fatal Exception Error referring to "VXD -----". This has occurred several times.
I went back into safe mode--since I cannot do anything in normal windows mode--- to do a scan disk and am now still waiting for ScanDisk to complete: it will take OVER 12 HOURS, and I'm not sure whether it will fix anything.
I have a 500MHz AMD K6-2, with 384 MB Ram, and 40 Gig HD with a dual head Matrox graphics monitor. Everything has been working more or less fine, with occasional hiccups, but nothing exceptional to note up until now.

It seems that some of the files needed to run windows successfully has been corrupted or deleted... if you have win98 or win98SE, and u have important files on your system, simply boot up the computer with your win98 boot disk and RE-INSTALL win98 over top....DO NOT FORMAT- this will erase all your files. Re-installing win98 will replace all the missing files ... and it will still save all your programs and documents.
