Hey I have been using a trial version of a program which deletes the index.dat files, temp files, temp net files, pretty much every track you make on your computer and have loved it. But now its running out and I need a FREE program that will do the same thing. If anyone knows of a free program I can use which will:
Delete index.dat files
Clear temporary internet files
Clear TEMP files
Clear History
Clear Forms
Clear run list
Pretty much hide all tracks. I use a shared computer and I dont like how anybody and everybody can get on it and spy on me haha. Before you ask, NO I dont look at porn and thats not why I want this.
Thanks in advance :)

You are in luck my friend,

Do a forum search for delindex or index.dat and see what you get.

Then you could try Spider (free) which will at least clear the Internet stuff like TIF's, History, Cookies etc:

Hey Raptor - don't know what michael2 is talking about - ya don't need a boot disk to run delindex..it's the best thing since sliced bread for clearing all those pesky TIF, recent, run-list etc (yeah, yeah, non-porn..lol) files. It's a cinch to run, just boot to command prompt, type in C:\delindex run when it's done just type win to start windoze again. You will be amazed at how much space you'll free up on your hard drive. And the best thing - it's free! (AND comes with a money-back guarantee) :)

Why on earth would you just keep downloading "free trials?"
1) You don't know exactly what you are getting. There is no guarantee that you will like the program. (They probably do delete things).
2) You are spending time locating, downloading, installing and uninstalling.
3)They will ALL leave traces on your computer if you delete them.
4) They are ALL BIGGER than delindex.bat

Take a few minutes now, go to the site michael and dave gave you. (For Windows 98 you do not need a boot up disk). Download it and run it. I helped one woman that got rid of 200 megs! That is extreme, but it does work and once you use it a couple of times, I don't think you will find it complicated.

With computers, learning is constant. No matter which program you have to learn. After all, you probably didn't know how to post a question here. You learned that.

I agree with using Delindex. I have been using it for quite sometime now. It is small and requires nothing but the batch file.

Place it in the C: folder.
Restart the computer to MS-DOS.
Type C:\delindex press [Enter]

Because the author created this as a batch file you can modifiy it to your liking.

If you are not familiar with batch files post back and I or someone else can modify it for you.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I'm absolutely sure you are right about Delindex...

Perhaps surprisingly though I use Window Washer (not free but, err...modified) and my own file called "General Clearer". This is a batch file that calls up all sorts of regular fixes, including my own .reg files, clearing everything up to my own liking. It even resets programs to my own preferred defaults with a bit of automated file swapping.

For the above reasons I have no need for Delindex but you can be pretty sure that if I had not produced my own .bat's I would grab that one like a man with three arms. What it offers is the ability to tailor it to suit your own needs, not those of MS or anyone else....nice.

However, I have my own folder with all sorts of goodies, downloaded and home made. It also houses things like registry cleaners, scandisk & defrag, all in preferred logical number order. It's called "Clearers Cockpit" (nice name?) and I run "the lot" from time to time, saving the last good registry as a final gesture.

Great fun

Derek,

There are good reasons people such as yourself don't have to format the hard drive for 5 yrs. or is it 6yrs. now? :)

I do like the idea of "Clearers Cockpit", one folder to store all of the goodies in.
The little lady is very good about running scandisk and defrag on her computer along with, yes Windows Washer. :) She does forget about the other things to clean up on a regular basis so I shall point her to your nice idea.

Delindex in my opinion is the way to go for users that are not familiar with creating batch files. For those that are familiar I would still suggest they look over delindex.bat, they may find some lines that they were not familar with to make it run faster ect...

I am off to Best Buy, a store here in the States. They have 40Gb Maxtor hard drives for $39.99 U.S. dollars after the rebates and 80Gb Western Digitals for $59.99! Hopefully they have some at the local store, otherwise I will be back online ordering it from their website. Last time I went out to buy one was when Bryco told me of a sale at another store.
Instead I came back with a laptop. :)

Always a pleasure talking with you. Wish me luck on my new plasma screen tv..., I mean hard drive. :)

Cheers and best wishes to you and yours,
Mesich

Hey, what a nifty little program delindex is,I was a little hesitant at first because I had never worked in dos before with any type of program. Well I have to tell you,the program is a snap to use, and talk about simple. It does look a little intimidating at first glance, but it isn`t. I ran it, let it do it`s thing, and bingo, I got back 35mb that I had in wasted junk. After running it, I went back and ran all of my programs to make sure nothing was affected, and all was well.

I ran Window washer(paid program) and cleaned the harddrive the best I know, and still the delindex program removed at least 10 megs of junk. Great stuff.

Peters321,
I am sure Renaissance Man would be happy to hear that.

Mesich / Derek Hi.
I wrote my own compiled program and run it in autoexec.bat - so index.dat and everything I want deleted, gets done every boot up. But that is beyond the average computer user and I think delindex.bat is great for non-programmers.

Are you getting the 40gb or the 80gb? Or both? Best of luck with it.

Hi Raptor,

Let us know how you come along.

Sekirt,

I got the 80Gb WD, they were out of the 40Gb Maxtors. They were suppose to get another shipment in last night so I am going back today for a 40Gb.

My 20Gb is enough for what I do but I will be able to use them when upgrading or building someone a computer.

Best Regards,
Mesich
