I can't seem to get this computer to boot with a 98 boot disk. I get as far as verifying the DMI pool data. After that, all I get is a flashing cursor. The computer it self will "Only" boot up in safe mode. I know the boot disk is a good disk. I just made it on another PC with 98se on it & tried it before this happend.
Any help would be great.
P.S. I'm the guy with the computer that won't detect a mouse, no matter what we try, & I've tried alot, nothing seem to work So I wanna try reformatting to see if that helps. It can't hurt...lol

You need to get a handle on how things work. If you have a Windows 98 boot disk you shouldn't be in windows at all. You should get a startup menu. If you did get the install going how did you plan on maneuvering in windows. Did you ever try entering the BIOS and checking to make sure the serial ports are enabled. That is the only way a serial mouse will work.

Hi maxx

Go into the BIOS and look at the setting for Boot Sequence.
You want your floppy drive to be set as first boot device.

While you are there, also look for the setting that says to "Load BIOS defaults" and execute that.

As I explained above I am using a "win98seBoot disk".!! But it doesn't really matter now. It turned out, the "A" drive wasn't reading the boot disk. I slipped in another "A" drive & it worked fine. I got the pc formatted with win98se back onto it but I still cannot get it to detect a mouse....& Yes,of course I checked the BIOS after my first 2 attempts with no results.Maybe I'll try a USB mouse & see if it works.? I know I won't quit until it all works.
Maxx
Thanks for your help.

Did it ever work with a PS/2 or serial mouse? Sounds like a messed up BIOS setting to me. What board do you have? Have you ever updated the BIOS?

I Just received an old computer as a gift.
1 Boot Device- NETWORK(can't be changed)
2 Boot Device- Floppy
When I start it up it gives me the following message:

"Pri Master HDD Error"
"Run SETUP"
"Press F1 to Resume"

I press F1 then select option 1 which is:
"1. Start computer with CD-ROM support"

After this the following message appears:

"Windows 98 has detected that drive C does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition. There are several possible causes."
"1. The drive may need to be partitioned...
2. You may be using third-party disk-partioning software...
3. Some viruses also cause your drive C to not register..."

"The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive C."

"A:\>"

I the type format c: after A:\> (A:\>format c:)

Then it tells me:

"Format not supported on drive C.
Format terminated."
"A:\>"

I type fdisk after A:\> (A:\>fdisk)

Then the following message appears:

"No fixed disks present"
"A:\>"

I don't know what to do next, or why this is happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please have patience with me for I am only 16 years old. Thank you.

Hi Cesar

It looks like your HDD is not being detected by the BIOS.

First thing to do is...check the jumpers on the drive.

You want the jumper to be set to MA ( or Master )
Look at the top of the HDD and there should be a diagram to tell you which jumper pins correspond to the MA setting.

Then check that the wide grey IDE cable is plugged to the Primary IDE port.
Depending on the motherboard, IDE channels will be marked as either 0 and 1... or as 1 and 2.
Choose 0 if it says 0 and 1
Choose 1 if it says 1 and 2

Plug the grey IDE cable from the CDROM to the Secondary IDE port on your motherboard.

Then start up the computer and go into the BIOS.
Look for the setting that says "Load BIOS defaults" and run it.

Then go to the setting that says Auto Detect Hard Drive, and run that.

If you get a choice there, choose LBA mode.

Then restart your computer and see what you get !

Good luck

Maxx,
"Yes,of course I checked the BIOS"

We are not mind readers and have no way of knowing your PC expertise. For instance: You state that you are using a Win98 Bootdisk but what you were needing is actually referred to as a "Win98 Startup disk" so it is difficult to know what you know.

Moving on...
Once you are at the desktop hit the Win+Pause/Break keys to bring up your System Properties page.

Use the right arrow key to get to the Device Manager tab.
Use the Tab key to get down to the main window and then use the down arrow key to get to Mouse.
Use the right arrow key to expand the Mouse and then use the down arrow key to select your current mouse devise that is listed.

Use the Tab key to get to the Remove button at the bottom. Hit the Enter key.

Use the Tab key to get to the Ok button.

Restart the machine to get it to redetect your mouse.

Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, it wasn't my intention.

About the only thing I haven't done yet is to remove the device so I'll give it a shot & let ya know,
Thansk,
