Comment:

I'm wanting to re-fomat my hard drive and would like to install Win XP on my P2 400 Mhz system. I would also like to work around the partition of 2/8 GB split. Is it possible to load Win XP on my system and can I elimate the partition?

Just toss the xp cd in and let it go to work...you have enough machine to at least run xp.

my machine is very similar to yours,500mhz,256mb. just running windows Me and aol often uses over 200mb of ram. I wouldn't put xp on my machine, it would slow it down. Is there some application you need xp for. I would stick with 98, maybe go to 98se, and go to Ms web site for all availalbe security updates

I'd go with skipcox's advice.
What you need is ram and hard disk space to run an OS. The overhead of the OS wrt to speed is not very prominent as compared to memory.
You are safe enough when it come to ram so carry on!
PS: see if you can overclock that CPU to get the last bit of performance out of it.

larry,

Your machine should run XP decently. If you're using 200MB of RAM, you apparently have something going on in the background. I'm guessing you didn't tweak your installation of WinME using Trev's "How to Run WinME Well" tips. You're probably infected with spyware too, especially since you use AOL.

BTW, you'd be much better off with a different ISP.

I have XP running solidly on a laptop with 160MB RAM. Surfs and runs MS Office. We don't do games. You will be given the choice of how to utilize your disk during the installation.

have been to "how to run ME well" many times. have everything not needed unchecked in MS config, run spybot search & destroy, adware from lavasoft and also run "delindex" using my boot floppy.

Hello everyone,

I agree with the others that you have plenty of machine there to run WinXp.

As Clyde stated you will be given an option to choose the partition in which to install WinXp. There, you can also delete and create new partitions and WinXp will format them.

Best Regards,
Mesich

If you use AOL 9.0, "you have Spyware". AOL installs it automatically, then protects it with their so-called Spyware Protector.

Dump AOL & get a real ISP.

I run WinXP Pro on PII 333MHz with 128MB RAM and it runs fine.

Minimum requirements are:
233 MHz
64 MB RAM
1.5 GB Hard drive space
Video that supports DirectX 8 and 800x600 resolution
And recommended minimums are:
300 MHz
256 MB RAM
4 GB Hardrive space
1024x768 resolution

Hello all :)

just for information's sake:
am running winxp on 256MB (underclocked cpu =>underperforming memory). For the sake of experiment I disabled virtual memory. I could do *most* of my daily work without getting a "virtual memory low" error.
