I want to format drive C, and reinstall Windows
98 (first edition)...can someone please tell me
how?

If you are set on doing the format, I have a bootdisk for windows 98 that will give you the option to format the hardrive and then re-install windows all in one shot.let me know if you want it I'll be glad to send it.

Linz...You have to create an "F-Disk" first.
I took the easy way out and went into Office Depot and had one of the young salesmen create one for me...in a slow period that evening. They don't normally do that...but he was nice and understanding. I slipped him $10.00 for his time and consideration.
I wrote out 2 pages of instructions that he verbally gave me....along with the Disk that he had created.
You have to do it from the MS-DOS command. It asks if you want large disk support...YES.
The you have to Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive.
Then you Delete Primary DOS Partition. Then you have to recreate your DOS Primary Partition.
Then it verifies the drive.
Then you hit "Escape".
Then you insert your Original Restore Disk that came with your computer and remove your DOS Floppie F-Disk.
When it goes to your DOS Prompt...Click "Control--Alt--Delete.
Then you follow the on screen instructions that comes with your original restore disk.OR......
You might want to take it into a reliable computer fix-it shop and have them create the "F-Disk" and have them re-load the whole thing on for you. It will run between $50.00 and $60,00 to have them do it.It's a little hairy...and scarey to try and attempt it yourself.
Either way that you do it...Good Luck.
Rich....

Actually, i read the "How-to" on the site, but i'm confused...in step 9 it says: "9.Reboot: Reboot the system using either the Reset button or {Ctrl}+{Alt}+{Delete}. The system should boot up from the hard disk this
time, and stop at the "C:" prompt. Note that if you get an error such as "NO ROM BASIC, SYSTEM HALTED" or "No boot device found" at this stage, this means you forgot to set the primary DOS partition "active". Reboot from the floppy, run FDISK again and use option 2 to set the primary partition active, then reboot. If you get an error like "No operating system", this means you probably forgot the "/s" parameter when formatting the C: drive. Put the floppy disk back in the drive and then return to step 5."
But no where does it say what to do after "The system should stop at the C: prompt"
...can you help me?

If you get to the part where it boots to the c:\> command promt, you did everything correct. You have a newly partitioned and formatted hard drive with no operating system, so all you need to do is install you operating system and you'll be fine. If you need help with this, reply back.

so when it gets back to c:/>, do i just enter setup ? i just dont know what to do AFTER i format the computer...when it gets to c:...
please help!!

To enter setup you need to do one of two things. The easiest is to boot up with your win 9x boot disk, then at the a:\> prompt, type setup.
The second way is if the first doesnt work. You can boot up with cdrom support, and then change to your cd drive letter (ie: cd e:) because if your drive was d:, it will be e: when you boot up with the floppy because it makes a thing called a ramdrive (uninportant, just move your cd drive letter back one) Then type setup, or use the dir command and find setup on your windows cd and then set it up.

So much misinformation.....
First, to Rich Barnett, you NORMALLY don't need to fdisk the hard drive at all. This is only necessary if you want to change the partitioning on the drive. Most people only have 1 partition anyway, and until you learn a bit more about computers this is the easiest way to keep things. Even the majority of intermediate users only have 1 partition on their HD.
Next, you can't run setup from the A:\> prompt. The setup information resides in the Win98 directory on the CD, not on the floppy disk. Insert the Win98 CD into your CD-ROM Drive. To change to the proper directory, first type: E: (then hit ENTER). This is assuming that the CD-ROM is your E: drive. Tommy was correct that a Win98 bootdisk creates a RAMDRIVE and your CD will be bumped 1 letter. This will bring you to the E:\> prompt.
At the E:\> prompt, type: CD Win98 (ENTER)
This will bring you to the E:\Win98> prompt.
At the E:\Win98 prompt, type: SETUP (ENTER).Follow the directions from there.
Good luck.
Dave
