I successfully re installed windows 98 on my PCG - 735 sony vaio notebook and tried to partition my hard disk using fdisk. Most of the time to program crashed but I did tell it to partition my drive - I don't recall being asked how big a partition - and restarted the computer to make the changes. It said "missing operating system". I used product recovery CD again and still it said missing operating system. Fips tells me that I have 4 partitions part 1 unbootable - majority of disk; part 2 bootable 0Mb, part 3 nonbootable 0Mb, part 4 non-bootable 133Mb. I tried format c: and it said "trying to recover allocation unit" and starts counting slowly through a number. I left it for 17 hrs and it is on 36,502. I have no idea what this means but if it is disk clusters then it will take about 26 days to complete. Any ideas of how to fix the problem? When ever i use fdisk it crashes and when trying to read c: it tells me the media type is invallid. Any response would be greatfully recieved.

Confused !!!
you successfully installed win98.
THEN tried to partition the drive? ? ? ?
Why?

The usual order is:
partition (fdisk)
format
install OS

Sounds like your active partition has no system files on it. I think I would start all over.

Format is detecting bad spots. Could be your drive is dying. Download a low level format or zero fill utility from the HD manufacturer's site and run it. This will remove all partition info and data. Then repartition and format. If you still get the bad cluster messages when fomatting look for a new HD.
