I have a HP e-vectra. It is a very small computer and when the system crashes I can only boot it up with a cd boot up disk. I could not get my hard drive to format so I installed Win NT and formated the hard drive then I was able to install Win 98. I had Win XP but had a lot of problems. Now the problem is that when I formated my harddrive with Win NT I can only access 2 gigs of an 8 gig harddrive. What commands am I suppose to type in when I boot from a cd boot up disk. I tried format c: and it would not work

Try the following...
You will need a Windows 95/98 boot disk.1) Boot from the Windows 9x boot disk.
2) At the "A:\" prompt type "fdisk" and hit Enter.
3) If/When prompted press "Y" to enable large disk support.
4) Select option 3 (removes partitions) from the FDisk menu.
5) Select option 4 (removes non DOS partitions) from the sub-menu.
6) Press "Y" when prompted to continue through the removal process.
7) Once back ot the main FDisk menu, select option 1 (create Primary DOS partition).
8) Follow it through and set the partition size as the maximum size available.
9) Once that is complete, use Escape to exit FDisk back the the A:\ prompt then restart your PC.
10) Let it boot up again from the boot disk then at the A:\ prompt type "format c:".
11) When prompted 'are you sure', type "Y" and hit Enter.
It should now be formating the full 8GB (give or take). Hope this makes sence and more importantly...works for you.
