I have aquired a hard drive from a friend and want to install windows 98 on it. It has server 2000 and my system will not support it. I have tried to get in to the set up but it has a password on it and the system shuts down when I try to access it. I have a boot disk that I am using to get to a dos prompt. When I type format c:/s at the a prompt I get a bad command error. I have tried just format c: and still get a bad command error. Any suggestions. Is there any way to get the drivers off of the drive before I format it.

The win2K install most likely has a NTFS partition.

Boot with the boot disk and run Fdisk

Answer Y to all the Q's.

Delete the Non-dos partition.

Create a new primary DOS partition.

Reboot to the boot disk. Format c:

I tried the fdisk command at the a: prompt. is this correct. If not I have tried to get to the C: prompt and it gives a bad command or file name for the fdisk and the c: prompt
this is what I have typed
A:>fdisk
bad command or file name
A:>C:/
bad command or file name
whats up with this?

If you are using a standard Win98 boot disk then A:\>FDISK should be all you need to type in. If you don't have a Win98 boot disk you can download one from www.bootdisk.com

If your boot disk does not have the Fdisk command on it you will get a bad command or file name returned.

Boot to the boot disk and type in DIR /w
This will list all the file on the boot disk.

If FDISK is not listed you will need to add it to the boot disk or create a good WIN98 boot disk.

To create a boot disk in windows 98.
Start ---> settings--> control panel ---> Add/remove programs

Click on the Start up disk tab.
Insert a blank floppy in the drive.
Clixck on create disk.

If you just want to add the Fdisk command to the disk. navigate to the c:\windows\command directory and copy FDISK.exe and format.com to the boot disk that you have.
