Driver Genius Professional Ver 1.5

Driver Genius is a professional tool for backing up or restoring the drivers, it can fast detect all the devices in computer and backup the drivers, and it can make the drivers into the zip-compressed format or self-extractor format files. When you reinstall the operation system, you can use restore-drivers function to restore all the drivers. You need only click the mouse, and then the drivers will be installed into your system automatically. Certainly, you can also make the drivers into an auto-install package, in this way, the drivers installation is as simple as the other software installation. It has the simple wizard mode and even beginner can also use it easily.

Just downloaded it. It costs you nothing to download and is a 15 day try version. After that you are supposed to buy it.

The 98 CD will have enough drivers for basic operation of the hardware. Once loaded, you'll be able to find out what hardware is on your machine and if required, download the appropriate drivers to get full hardware optimization. Or do this prior to the format. Just ensure you can store them on appropriate sized media. Floppies using PKZIP, or partition your drive... Hmm, well you'd need a partitioning software to do that with the O/S loaded.

You could create a sub-directory and store them there, but you'd have to avoid formatting, and just delete the boot files and the windows sub-directories prior to a reload of the O/S. Instructions for this route can be posted if required.

Thats no good as you need to no what hardware you have before you format the drive, as after windows will give no hint as to the make and model of the hardware it does not have drivers for. Then you have to take apart the PC to figure out what they are.

Download AIDA32 and it will tell you what's in your machine. Disk drive make/models, memory, etc. Right down to firmware versions. It's free.

The point I'm trying to make is, if linda is going to format C:, and she has no other drives/partitions to store the drivers on for re-loading later, what's the point in trying to save the current drivers. As long as she has internet access once she's up and running with the re-loaded O/S, she can get what she needs (up to date drivers) with a little time spent.

As I stated, saving the drivers (if she wants to do that) is best done by creating a sub-directory on her drive, *then* deleting the boot files and windows directories and reloading. There's several driver savers out there which are free. But she'll need the space/media to store them on.

She is a novice at this and I have never come across a modem that windows has put drivers in for using 98. I have seen it in XP home.

Linda,

I recommend you make sure you have your modem drivers (or, if you are on a network, your network card drivers) so that you can access the internet right after reinstalling Windows. Then, go to www.zhangduo.com/udi.html and download the Unkown Device Identifier. It'll let you look at vital information for every single component in your PC (model and make).

Then, any devices that you don't have the drivers for you can download off the 'net.

I hope this helps,

James
