format C: & WIN won't install

I've formatted C: and am installing Windows. The screen locks up with a black rectangle in the middle, to the sound of a single beep, in the initial stage of the install. I get the message run-time error R6003 -interger divide by 0. The lock-up occurs with multiple disks (I've tried 2 95s and a 98). Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks.

Ann,
You probably have boot sector virus protection enabled in your BIOS Setup. To eliminate this you will need to enter your BIOS Setup and disable this feature. It may also be called "write protect boot sector" or "write protect hard disk".
If that isn't the problem then my next suggestion would be that your hard disk may be defective. The HD manufacturer may have a program to test the hard disk and tell you its status.
