Have a HDD I like to format and use as Slave.
It has 3.1 on it and don't have the Computer
it came out of. I put it in my Computer as the Master. Booting with 98 Startup Disk, FDISK and FORMAT will not work due to the Error Message: Can not access Drive 1.
Have tried several Startup Disks.
Thanks for any Reply.

Hi,
Go into the BIOS and make sure the computer sees the new hard disk. Also, make sure your jumper settings are correct on the HDD. If you hooked it up as a master, make sure the jumper setting on it is also master. Also, what is the capacity of this old hard drive?
Good Luck,

Hi,
Are you absolutely sure that the drive is good? I'm beginning to wonder about that. Did you happen to try a windows 95 boot disk? I guess it's a possibility that the newer BIOS won't see that small of a hard drive, but I don't know for sure. Maybe someone could clarify that for us. (Hint Hint).
This may even be more trouble than what it's worth, because of the minimal capacity of the drive. You wouldn't be able to put much on there, but there's plenty of room for documents and things like that.

Check the jumper setting instructions very carefully. Some, drives (like Western Digital) have unique jumpering. Also make sure the cable is plugged in correctly. You didn't say wether or not the drive was recognized in the Bios.

Thanks for all the Tips. AUTO in BIOS did
not dedect it for Reasons unknown. I did put
the HDD Data:Cyl.,Heads, Sectors, ect. in manualy and it works. You are right, the HDD
is small, but I hate to throw Stuff away.
Thanks again.

Newer bios's can "see" a small drive.
