Forget HDD passwd for IBM thinkpad 1200

It's been a while since I last touched my IBM thinkpad 2000 series. I've locked up the HDD with a password & found that I've forgotten my password.
Heard that I may have to forgo the HDD-useless, locking function very effective. May have to buy a new one.
Please anyone can help me to find an unlocking function or way to retrieve my passwd or get round this problem. Desperate cos' impt info in HDD!
