I have an nvidia geforce 6200, latest drivers, latest directx and the monitor drivers installed. I can't get the native 1440x900 resolution in 98, can in xp though. I'm running it at 1280x800 and it gives me the same aspect ratio but its kinda fuzzy and big. Also the nvidia control panel won't let me set a custom resolution.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If Win XP and Win 98 are not on the same computer using drivers for the same video card and the same monitor, you're comparing apples to oranges.
If all those things are the same and you're using Plug and Play Monitor for both, the Win 98 version of that may not be capable of providing you with 1440x900.

I've never seen video settings that allow you to specify custom resolutions.

You should be able to decrease any fuzziness by adjusting brightness, color, contrast, sharpness settings.

Turn on Clear Type in Windows XP - makes type on LCD screens look clearer

(there is no Clear Type for older operating systems).

Thanks, and yes it is on the same computer. Acer provides a driver for the monitor but it only says windows xp, like everything else these days. I had contacted BFG tech, who makes my video card and they said to apply a custom resolution in the nvidia control panel. But when I do that it says input is invalid??? XP works fine though.

You are probably stuck with using 1280 x 800 in that case in Win 98.
I doubt Plug and Play Monitor in Win 98 has 1440 x 900 as a selection.
XP has built in generic LCD monitor drivers but they don't support 1440 x 900.

Oops.
Win 98 has built in generic Laptop Display Panel (LCD) drivers but they don't support 1440 x 900.

Thanks, I have figured out a solution. To use this program called powerstrip, it allows you to create custom resolutions that can be selected in display properties.

Thanks for the help though.

I've just had exactly the same problem with a new Gateway monitor. Gateway seem reluctant to blame Windows, although Linux works perfectly on the same computer. I have an nVidia graphics card that seems to list (under Windows) every resolution except 1440x900. Mr Spock has the answer though - Powerstrip can make a custom profile that gets added to the Properties slider. Now why couldn't Gateway do that..?
