they are Windows System file and as you found out, if deleted, they are recreated at next staartup.

The folder.htt is used if and when you 'Customise' a folder.

The Desktop.ini file tells windows what special traits a folder is capable of.

Desktop.ini is the file that lets Windows have special folders that operate different to a normal folder such as C:\Recycled, C:\Temporary Internet Files and C:\Windows\History c:\My Documents and any subfolders in these ones.

If you say just drag C:\My Documents folder to D: or E: drive, the next time you go to open or save a file in an application like Word, it automatically knows that C:\My Documents folder is in the new locatio on D: or E:

AFAIK, this is bacause of the Desktop.ini file and its associations throught the Windows 'NameSpace' and CLSID registry keys.

I do not know why there is a desktop.ini in some of the other folders.

thank you very much for your reply.

As i know, this two files only created in certain folder only. But it is unnormal when it created automatically in other folders.
Even that for the floopy disk, after i formated it, the folder.htt had created inside the floopy disk, why?
The problem bacome worst, when my friends use the floopy disk, their pc also infected.

i try to use the latest updated norton antivirus 2002 s/w to scan it, but cannot found any problem.

hi,
Every one in our hostel was facing this problem in there system whenever a new folder
was created .Its present in windows98,windows2000,windowsXP and even in,wndows me.
Infact its one form of REdloaf virus as detected by someone. We have got antivirus for it and it can be removed.
its eating 32kb of memory of each folder that you create.
u will find ur system speed is decreased.
when it copies itself in enough number of folder,it activates itself and user is not able to open the system.
better remove it soon

I have the same problem - sort of. Whenever I start my computer, two Microsoft Notepad windows pop up with some stuff in it, which I found to be this desktop.ini/folder.htt thing. But this only happens when I start my computer, not any other programs. And several days before, I found a shortcut to the desktop.ini thing in every folder of my "Favorites." I deleted all of them and they never came back. THen this started happening today. The desktop.ini's are slowing down some of my programs as well.

Can someone tell me what's going on?
