Each time I reboot and Windows comes up, the "Program Files" folder opens on screen. If a folder is open when Windows is shut down, that same foldere will be displayed when Windows comes up again. But, when the folder is closed it should not come up anymore. Obviously a value is set in the registry or something. Comments?

There were a flood of these questions in the Windows ME forum - As I recall it had something to do with Norton software.

Might be worth looking in the ME area.

I have Win98SE and don't have Norton. I will check out the ME area since ME is the next incarnation of 98.

If anyone else has an idea please advise. Thanks

I did not see anything on the ME board pursuant to this.

Could be that Kevin's removed them - but, they were there...

As I recall it was NewGrl that responded to them - post the question to her.

I've opened a thread in the ME forum - we'll see if she's still around.

Just a thought. Check msconfig to see if it's something in the 'startup' group that's doing it.

I did a search for "folder opens after reboot" at google. Found some stuff. If there is a registry entry at CurrentVersion\Run with a single quote as data, that will cause explorer windows to open at startup. There is also a time issue regarding Norton stuff. A final possibility may be what causes mine.

I have been unable to update IE. Each time I try I save the Windows and Program Files directories. On my last attempt I saved the Program Files directory as "Program". According to a message I read this will always cause a window to open. I don't have that directory anymore, but I went and created one, booted, and sure enough explorer opens that window. It also opens "Program Files" though. I deleted the C:\Program folder and still have the problem.

The second paragraph in post #7 interested me so I decided to make a test. I created a 'c:\program' directory. I then rebooted but no folder opened up. Then a strange thing happened, that I don't understand, but suspect might be related to the above problem. I went to delete the 'c:\program' directory and got a warning that deleting it might affect registered programs.
