I have a folder on my desktop that has no name I cannot delete this folder I read another post that says use regedit to remove: post info below I just do not know where I should look in regedit. I know how to find but the directions are vague.
POST
Regedit from the Run box and all about saving the registry in case you do anything wrong.Follow what is given in the links through to explorer then go to Namespace
There will be folders with numbers in that go to such things as My Documents and Recycle Bin. Obviously, these must stay but if you find a blank folder then you are in business.
Yeah, I know I said I am off but could not resist this one further step.
If anyone knows how I can find this, please let me know

I think I recall this one. If the post was on here have you got it's number please? I feel sure the actual links through the registry were already given elsewhere in the post by someone else.
The warnings were just the usual precautions because you need to be careful when editing the registry.

You cannot delete a folder by changing Registry entries.
Where is the folder and what happens when you try and delete it? Error message?

If the name of the folder was a "~" then post back as Dave01 suggested.
Otherwise this was it, you go through these:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
explorer
Desktop
NameSpaceWhen you open the NameSpace folder there will be folders inside with long numbers as their names. [These in turn contain entries for My Documents, Recycle Bin and the like, so they must obviously be retained].
If, when the NameSpace folder is opened you find a folder which is just blank (no long numbers or anything) then you right click and Delete it.
The safety precaution before you do anything is to go to My Computer (in the registry), drop down the menu under "Registry" at the top and select "Export Registry File". Give this a name when requested and pop it into some known folder. It will produce a file in the form "name.reg".
If you delete the wrong thing in the registry then you double click this file to restore the registry back again.

I accept what you are saying in general, but there is a known problem concerning a blank desktop file, that can only be remedied in the registry.

The file on your desktop named ~ is actually a backup of your Outlook Express address book. You can delete the file, but every time you update your address book the file reappears. Do a file search for *.wab . This will find the folder where your address book is located. The backup has the same name except that the extension is changed to .wa~ . You can either delete the file from your desktop, or rename it with the same name as the address book backup file and move it to the folder with the address book overwriting the old backup file. This is caused by a bug in one of the critical updates that have been applied, and there is no fix.

Here's another reference:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/52301.htmlSorry but I don't think this particular para of mine was quite right:-
<If, when the NameSpace folder is opened you find a folder which is just blank (no long numbers or anything) then you right click and Delete it.>
The numbered folder is likely to exist, it's just that when opened it will be blank (ie it doesn't contain Recycle Bin or whatever).
So it's a case of deleting the numbered folder that is empty.Apologies again. If you are unsure shout back again before you delete and explain what you've found, then we can be more precise.

.... sorry to "go on" but we must be absolutely certain which problem we are dealing with.
If there is no name whatsoever then you follow all that guff I gave (plus my correction). If the file is named "~" then this is a quite different problem.
D

I think the ~ file is file and not a folder.
If the no-name folder is a folder then it will need to be removed as noted by Derek.

Excuse me, but has anyone been apprised of the actual name of the folder yet and what happens when she tries to delete it? Until we know that basic info, we can speculate endlessly and aimlessly.
So did i miss that info or what?
Patience is a virtue ...

Poster said it had "no name" (see first line), which is what I based my stuff on.This appears to be confirmed because NameSpace is also mentioned. The poster also claimed difficulty with previous instructions about that particular fix.
I accept it is worth double checking tho.
