I have got a 1.44 meg floppy drive and i installed it in yestuday but when i turn on my computer the green light stays on, so i tried switching it around and then it won't even come on at all, but i also changed all of my BIOS settings and the stupid thing is still not working. I know the floppy drive works because it is brand new!!!
Can somebody please tell me what is wrong!!!
Thankz in advance
Darin Luckie

What did you switch around?
Usually, a constant green light means that ribbon cable is 180 degrees out of configuration.

It could be the power supply is putting out too much power and frying the drive test it with a voltmeter.I ruined a few FDs before I realized what was happening, don't put a new FD in until you've tested.

"I know the floppy drive works because it is brand new!!!"
That is not a true statement. It may be new, that does not mean it works.
Since you got the light to come on, that means you had the cable hooked up backwards. Is it possible that
You bent a pin when pluggin in the cable?
The cable is just plain bad?
The new floppy drive is actually defective?
Are you sure it is now getting power?
Are you sure the floppy disc you are trying to use is a 1.44 disk and not a 720K disk? How do you know it doesn't work?
How have you tried to tell? The MOST BASIC off all things a floppy drive can do, is boot a system. Double check your bios setting, and make sure that the floppy drive is no.1 in the boot order. make yourself a bootable floppy and see if the system will boot to it.

You may have the cable turned end for end. It won't work that way either. The end with the split and twist in it goes to the floppy. The other end may be reversable also but the red wire goes to the #1 pin on the Mboard. Look for numbers next to the socket. All the sockets pointing the same way will all have the #1 on the same end. Look at the other drive cables if they are parallel to the floppy cable.

Also look for a jumper on the drive for master or slave. I've seen a couple of "newer" floppy drives with jumpers. If you find one ensure it's set correctly for your configuration. As stated above, ensure the "twisted" section of cable is attached to the floppy, and the other "straight" end is attached to the motherboard or controller card, both ends having pin 1 in the correct orientation.

I have tested my floppy and it will work well with my testing power supply, but the one in my computer is even newer and better than my tester, i also went out and bought some new cables to test it with but it still isn't working on my computer!!!
I checked the numbers and the cable seems to be plugged in right, but it is still not working!Thankz in advance

I have checked all of my BIOSsettings and know that is all configured correctly because i checked both the manuel for my flopopy and the manuel for my mobo. So my problem nowis that it works but won't boot, I know it works because when i am in windows i can store dataon to the disks and remove data, but when i try to boot up my computer using a floppy thesystem says, "Disk I/O Error, replace the disk and then press any key" Whatiswrong now!!!!
